This is a long term review coming after almost two years of owning and using the 555-1.

The handle: This thing isn't called the Griptilian for nothing.

This is a knife that is small enough to comfortably carry, friendly enough to use in public without questions, and still big enough actually get some work done when you need it to.

In fact, the 555-1 is really the only competitor in the Benchmade lineup for me.

For a while Benchmade’s fit and finish had slipped, as I experienced on my 940-1, but my 555-1 was stunningly well made. However, if you need something that is capable of bigger tasks can also work as a defensive knife, I recommend checking out the full size Griptilian. While the blade is nearly 3 inches, the handle itself is very space efficient, giving the knife a closed length of 3.87 inches. The Benchmade Griptilian 551 blade carries the stamp of an individual, well-known blade specialist. I also like the sheepsfoot blade as a slicer and the spidey-hole as it makes it easier to clean the knife since I do use it for food sometimes.

The handle has a real palm swell and plenty of jimping, making it an ideal folder for long-term use. I used this knife for many years as my sole EDC and then I lost it.

The full edge is not polished, just a very thin apex is polished, but it is indeed sharp. The 20CV steel is awesome, the edge is perfect.

I had the standard 154cm and the steel on this does take some more time and muscle to sharpen, but once done it seems to hold that edge quite well. Brand new direct from Benchmade.
