An artist: Monet. Overall I like it - well made, balanced, clean and elegant, not boring and not overused by the crowd. Bought for my father in the late 60s, it was a lemony spiced aroma with oakmoss, though I remember tobacco and suede as undertones. I still believe Eau Sauvage has the best lemony scent I'm seeking of all the above listed, but for the price it just isn't worth $100. A gentleman has strength, but balances that with effortless charm. I'm game! I'm always a little uneasy about fragrances that have been around for such a long time because they can smell very dated. The same way that Douglas Adams convincingly floated the proposition that every civilized culture in the galaxy had created some version of a gin & tonic, I always suspect that a version of Eau Sauvage is inscribed on the pages of some universal platonic playbook. Top notes are Lemon, Bergamot, Basil, Rosemary, Caraway and Fruity Notes; middle notes are Jasmine, Coriander, Patchouli, Orris Root, Carnation, Sandalwood and Rose; base notes are Oakmoss, Vetiver, Musk and Amber. I have the current formulation and I get good duration if I spray skin and clothes. I kinda figured it would be redundant like BDC edp. Picked this up at an airport Duty Free. Regardless of the fact some consider it dated, I guess this is something that makes it easier to wear - IMHO, it lost some edges, it became closer to what a common EdC is. I wanted the new Sauvage, not Eau Sauvage.... Gorgeous. The creator made the perfume legendary and characteristic for its fresh, citrusy notes, composed with spicy lavender on a masculine, woody base. Pros & Cons: Lovers of the original Sauvage will surely enjoy the slightly bolder, smoother composition of the Eau de Parfum, but those looking for increased sillage or longevity will be disappointed (*but full disclosure, my nose sometimes has difficulty registering ambroxan). Many a discussion pertain to 'vintage' and reformulations that 'make your nose laugh'. This pairs with any occasion and exudes a real touch of class or an extra dimension to one's style. Try this if you like: The original Sauvage but wanted just a bit more sweetness and less pepper; clean ambergris/ambroxan notes; the freshness of bergamot. I really like it! The drydown seems to go on for much longer than I remember. It takes the wearer's confidence up a notch.
