The Catawba River Tailrace is a tailwater fishery below Lake James dam that provides excellent brown trout fishing from September to May. The Watauga River is one of our most scenic and productive rivers. We recommend taking a float trip, but wade fishing trips are available on the Watauga as well, depending on generation schedules. The French Broad is a freestone river which starts south of Asheville and narrowly winds through Asheville City Limits and on North into Tennessee and into Lake Douglas.
This is one of the oldest rivers in the world and holds some of the best smallmouth bass fishing and musky fishing on the east coast. I went out this morning and hit the Swannanoa River here in town, giving it my first whirl actually fishing with my sweet new streamer rod. The Swannanoa is a disgusting hole of a river, with a bottom littered with tires, radiators and hobo skeletons, but it does get trout stockings and it is conveniently right here in town. The South Holston River is another one of our tail waters located near Bluff City Tennessee. This one of the most productive and aquatic rich rivers in the country.
